My journey ~

Ever since I was a child growing up in India, I've been fascinated by the profound beauty of mathematics—the universal language of patterns and numbers. My youth was spent immersed in puzzles, art, and tinkering, activities that I later realized were my first lessons in critical thinking, logic, and reasoning. These are the foundational skills for learning anything, especially mathematics and the sciences.

This passion initially led me to dream of becoming a mathematician. However, my path evolved from wanting to study mathematics to wanting to inspire others to love it. This is how my journey as a math educator began.

Over decades of working with students in India and the United States, I became more of a learner than a teacher. My guiding questions were always, "Why didn't this student understand?" and "How can I bridge the gap?" This constant inquiry helped me develop a love for asking simple questions that guide students to deeper insights and clearer connections. Seeing a student's confidence grow and witnessing their joy in the process became my anchor.

Even when I explored administrative roles, I was always drawn back to working directly with students. I vividly remember a student in 2021 who was completely disengaged because he wasn't being challenged. I offered to teach him pre-calculus, and twice a week we met in my office after school. Those sessions were a powerful reminder of what truly matters: the pure joy and love of learning.

My journey from the classroom to creating Mathelicious is inspired by the many students who taught me that learning is a unique and personal process. I believe that every student has the desire to learn; success depends on how effectively we can meet them where they are and empower them to move forward with confidence.

My "why" for Mathelicious Space~

The best part of being an educator has always been the "aha!" moments in the classroom—talking math with students, guiding them through challenges, and watching them grow. The worst part? The mountain of administrative tasks that pulled me away from them. Grading papers with minimal feedback and filling out report cards often felt like a disservice to the very students I was trying to help. For years, I've felt that I couldn't give every student the focused time and constructive feedback they deserved. Now, I am consciously choosing my time to support students in their journey! I am dedicating some of my time to supporting students who will benefit from 1-1 tutoring with me. Connect with me to learn more.

Some of you may not need 1-1 time with me, you may be exploring opportunities to learn on your own, ask a question and get steps to solve the problems at your own pace. Good news is that I have a solution for you too! As a fun weekend project, I started exploring generative AI platforms and technology. I figured deep learning happens when you put learning to practice which led me to create this space as a resource hub for high school students. I created the following:

  • Anytime tutor Kay - A tutor agent who will help you learn any math concept from numeracy to topology and beyond!

  • Internship Opportunities!

  • Scholarship Opportunities!

  • Volunteering Opportunities!

  • Fun Sudoku Puzzles

I hope you will find this space as useful and informative as I hoped when creating it!

Stories from the field ~

  • "Growing up, I always struggled with math and all its forms. Despite attending afterschool tutoring and receiving assistance through friends, my grasp on the subject never stuck. Incompetence snowballed into negative self esteem, until I truly believed math just wasn’t for me. As cheesy as it sounds, my perspective shifted when Ms. K became my math teacher in high school. What was once my weakest subject became one of my strongest. Her energetic and positive energy pushes students towards excellence, especially because Ms. K truly believes in student success. Easy to follow, detailed explanations, endless support, and her radiating attitude reinforced my own self belief in this subject, allowing me to excel in her class and beyond"

~ Rebecca Yeung, class of  2025

  • "I've never loved or remembered a class as much as Calc BC with Ms. Kolachina. Skipping Calc AB to take it, it was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I studied and I struggled, but I was able to get through it because I knew I was supported. Through it all, Ms. Kolachina was always there to answer any question I had. I appreciated that she encouraged us to learn independently, yet we could always come to her for help when needed. It taught me not to be afraid to ask for help, and I was always glad when I did. Her wit, warmth, and passion will stick with me forever as an example of what a true mentor should look like."

~ Former Student, class of 2025

  • "Math was always a subject I enjoyed, but when I reached Calculus AB, I began to struggle and found myself losing confidence. With Ms. K’s patience and support, I began to understand the material more clearly. She connected math to real-life applications, making lessons engaging and meaningful. To this day, I remember working on a prototype roller coaster project that helped me better understand concepts like derivatives. Ms. K’s passion for math was clear in every lesson. Because of her support and encouragement, I not only regained my confidence but also went on to take Calculus BC in college. I am truly grateful for Ms. K! 💜"

~ Ruby Peña, class of 2015

  • “Mrs. K had inspired me in Math so much and I had so much fun learning math during my high school years with. I passed my AP math exams before college and I am really grateful for Mrs K being my teacher and friend!!”

    ~ Ty, class of 2015

  • "As a fellow educator myself, I have come to realize that to become a successful educator and communicator, one must not only be knowledgeable on the subject but must also show a deep passion for learning and care for the students. Having had the privilege of learning Algebra 2, Precalculus, and AP Calculus under Ms. K from 10th to 12th grade, I appreciate that she always has students' best interests at heart and is always looking for fun and innovative ways to engage students and stimulate learning. Through her excellent rapport and dedication, Ms. K has helped hundreds of students like myself exceed expectations, excel, and achieve their dreams."

~ Ken Li, class of 2016

  • "Mrs. K is easily the best teacher I’ve ever had! What really made her different was how much she genuinely cared about teaching and about her students. You could feel it every day in class. She was always upbeat, always engaged, and it made a huge difference because it made me actually look forward to going to AP Calc BC, which I never thought I’d say. What stood out most was how she taught. She didn’t want us to just memorize formulas and move on, she made sure we actually understood what was going on and why it worked. Even when topics got difficult, she had a way of explaining things that made it click, and she would come over to your desk and walk through it step by step until it made sense, adapting to how each person learned. She’d also get genuinely excited when something finally clicked for you, which made you feel even more confident. You could tell she cared about whether we truly understood, and that made a big difference in how I learned!"
